Description:

Examination in depth of a select number of moral issues arising in medicine. Attention will be given to the role of ethical principles in decision-making in medical research and practice. Topics include abortion, experimentation with human subjects, informed consent, refusal of treatment, suspension of treatment, and the definition of death. Readings will include discussions of ethical principles in medical contexts and recent court decisions. Class meetings will consist of lectures with discussion, supplemented occasionally with films or videotapes.

Course web site:

This is a WebCT course. Registered students can find additional information and features at http://webct.rochester.edu

In addition to suggestions for writing the papers and lecture aids, there is a discussion group and links to interesting bioethics sites.

Required Readings:

Selections from:

Contemporary Issues in Bioethics, Beauchamp and Walters, eds. (Wadsworth, 6th ed.) (CIB)

Reprints of recent court decisions and other articles, available on electronic reserve at Rush Rhees Library (RRL)

Documents available on the World Wide Web (click on link)

Teaching Assistant:

John Deregowski will serve as a teaching assistant for this course. He will hold office hours in Lattimore 534 on Mondays and Wednesdays from 2:30-3:30. You may also contact him via email at: dere@mail.rochester.edu. In addition, Cori Ringholz (Take-Five) will serve as a Religion Fellow in this course. In that capacity she will be available for review sessions and for advice on writing the papers. You may reach her at: cr001h@mail.rochester.edu.

Requirements:

You are expected to do the assigned reading and to be prepared to discuss it at the class for which it is assigned. Regular class attendance is therefore required.

You will also write two short (5-6 page) papers. The first paper is to be a critical discussion of Mary Anne Warren's "On the Moral and Legal Status of Abortion" (CIB): 298, and it is due on February 19. Late papers will be accepted until the beginning of class on February 24, but they will be graded down. The second paper will be due on April 2. Plagiarism will not be tolerated.

There will be two essay tests. The first will be given in class on March 5. The second, to be given in class on April 30, will cover only the second half of the course. Each of these four graded assignments will determine 25% of your grade for the course.

Essays are in Beauchamp and Walters (page numbers in parentheses), unless otherwise noted.
